Typical slewing bearing configurations

The most commonly used types of rotary slewing design are the four-point contact ball slewing bearing, the double row ball slewing bearing, the three-row roller slewing bearing, and the crossed roller slewing bearing.

Four-point contact ball bearing

Four-point contact ball bearings are suitable for axial, radial, and moment loads. The four-point contact is distributed between the balls and the two split raceways. Typical areas of application for these bearings are machine tools, radar equipment, medical and construction equipment.

Double row rotary ball bearing

The design of an eight-point bearing is essentially the same as that of a four-point contact bearing. It includes an additional ball and a rolling groove configuration positioned and adjacent to the vertical axis, which allows the load to be distributed evenly between the two rolling groove designs. This configuration increases the permissible load by 75-80% compared to a four-point contact bearing. At the same time, there is the potential for up to 50% (approximately) additional dynamic loads.

Three-row roller slewing bearing

Of all bearing types, this design offers the highest possible load carrying capacity. Three-row roller configurations allow two rollers in the vertical axis to accept both axial and moment loads from the two adjacent rolling grooves, while a third roller reduces the radial load.

Crossed roller slewing support bearing

The roller and the race groove are located at a 45-degree angle to the axis. Additionally, the static load capacity for this type of design relative to the roller surface contact area is higher compared to four- and eight-point bearings; the stiffness in this design allows it to operate at higher speeds and gives it the opportunity for greater axle displacement during mounting. However, the radial-axial load limits are less than those of four- and eight-point bearing designs. This design is widely used in crane, construction, and military products.
